Institute of Physics

The institute with its historical headquaters on Friedemann-Bach-Platz has moved to its new facilities on campus Weinberg/Heide Süd in 2009, where all parts of the institute are now located. The new campus offers best conditions for studies and research, in particular thanks to the immediate proximity to our cooperation partners in the Fraunhofer facilities, the "weinberg campus Technology Park", and the Max-Planck-Institute of Microstructure Physics.

The physics institute in Halle presents itself as productive center of condensed matter physics, with specific key subjects in hard- and soft-matter science. In theory and experiment, the research is mainly focussed on surface and materials physics, nanostructured materials, photovoltaics, as well as biophysics and polymer physics. Students are acquainted with advanced up-to-date experimental and theoretical techniques at an early stage, and are actively promoted to get in contact with actual research work on an individual basis.

Solid-state physics employing advanced scanning tunneling microscopy or optical spectroscopy, polymer research on the basis of various scattering methods and sophisticated nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, each addressing attractive topics in basic and applied research, and many more activities of the experimental groups, shape the profile of Halle's physics. Strong theory groups work with numerical and analytical techniques in strong collaboration with the experimentalists. Our general Bachelor and Master degree programs, as well as our special programs such as Medical Physics and Polymer Materials Science (in English) offer numerous possibilities to interact with and get inspired by the research at the Institute of Physics
