Amyloid fibrils (Alzheimer peptide, parathyroid hormone)

Formation of amyloid fibrils is related to various diseases. We could show for fibrils from different Alzheimer peptides that formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds is the generic property dominating over local interactions of different amino acid side chains.

The mainly intrinsically disordered parathyroid hormone, controlling the calcium and phosphate level in blood, forms amyloid fibrils for storage (see figure). In this respect, we also investigate hybrid conjugates between peptide and synthetic polymers, to investigate the physico-chemical properties and mechanism of fibril formation.
